The soundtrack for 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High' was a partial inspiration with both 'Love Rules' by Don Henley & 'Somebody's Baby' by Jackson Browne both capturing the spirit of highschool teenage angst.

The lyrical theme is also playing off of George Michael's 'Careless Whispers'.

And add to that the harmony influence from the pure pop perfection of the Nick Lowe classic gem, 'Cruel To Be Kind'.
